With Betternet, you get access to multiple features and settings that can improve your privacy and security with our VPN. Please take a look at each feature below.
The Betternet app on Windows has 4 different categories, each with their own settings.
General
This tab contain some general settings which affect how the app itself behaves
Start on launch
This feature, if enabled, will cause the Betternet app to start when the computer boots up.
Always-on VPN
This feature, if enabled, will help the VPN reconnect automatically if it somehow gets disconnected. This will eliminate the need to manually connect the VPN if it does get disconnected.
VPN Special Features
This is not a setting. Whe nclicked, it will show you a screen of some special features Betternet offers.
Advanced
This tab contains more advanced settings which affect the VPN connection.
Kill Switch
This nifty features prevent IP leaks in case Betternet suddenly disconnects. If enabled, the killswitch will stop the flow of data, thus stopping any websites or other services over the Internet to obtain your real IP address.
Local Network Protection
If toggled on, this feature will block access to your local network. This is useful if you are located on a public network such as a hotel or café, to prevent others on the network from spying on you. As it will also prevent you from accessing other devices on your network such as printers or shared drives, you may wish to leave it disabled if you're at home or on another network that you trust.
Prevent IP leak
Enabling this will prevent your IP from being detected while connected to the VPN. Once connected to Betternet, your public IP has already changed, but this feature can prevent any sites, caches, or cookies from leaking your IP.
Safe WiFi Hotspots
If this setting is toggled on, then Betternet will attempt to automatically turn on or connect when you are connected to a secure WiFi hotspot. Secure WiFi hotspots are those listed as private networks in your firewall, which are protected by a password.
Unsafe WiFi Hotspots
If this setting is toggled, then Betternet will attempt to automatically connect to the VPN when you are connected to an Unsecured WiFi hotspot. Unsecure WiFi hotspots are those listed as public networks in your firewall, such as a hotel.
Protocols
This tab allow you to select the VPN protocol you want to use to establish a connection with the Betternet VPN servers.
Automatic (Recommended)
This is automatically turned on when you connect to a virtual location. When this protocol is selected, we will pick the fastest and most secure protocol to connect to for your network or area.
Hydra
This is our company-developed protocol. This unique protocol is the fastest in the VPN industry and faster than our other protocols. It is the most secure of our protocols.
IKEv2 (IPSec)
While IKEv2(IPSec) is less secure than the other protocols, this is one of our fastest protocols. While not on par with Hydra, this is still a reliable protocol that may help with certain technical issues.
WireGuard
WireGuard is our newest protocol. It has a strong balance between speed and security.
Split Tunneling
This tab allows you to fine-tune which applications or websites should use the VPN on your computer.
Bypass VPN
Bypass VPN allow you to specify which apps or website should bypass the VPN. Anything added to this list will use your normal ISP-provided IP address--even though everything else may be routed through the VPN.
Route via VPN
With this enabled, only the specific websites you list will go through the VPN connection. Do note that only the websites listed will go through the VPN, everything else will use your normal internet connection.
